For those of you who know the New Zealand kitchen design scene, you’ll need no introduction to the New Plymouth based industry leaders, Rowson Kitchens (previously featured on Cooper Interiors blog here). Just last month, Annika received not one but four awards in the National Kitchen & Bathroom Association Excellence in Design Awards and I couldn’t think of anyone more deserving. With over ten years of experience, Rowson Kitchens has built a strong reputation for innovative kitchen designs with immaculate craftsmanship, you only need to have a quick scroll their portfolio to see why. Brad and Annika continuously wow us with their attention to detail and ability to design stunning bespoke spaces at the hub of every home. This week, the spotlight is on the Nelmes Kitchen project, an extensive renovation of a coastal Lockwood home, designed of course, by the one and only Rowson Kitchens.
The original location of the kitchen was set into a small, dark corner of the home with just one small window. Annika utilised a long and unused section of the living/dining room to ensure the new galley style kitchen was bathed in morning sun and offered stunning coastal views, making it a much more inhabitable and enjoyable space to cook, dine and socialise in.
This look was achieved by using an extensive palette of materials including Sage Acrymatte in “Eclipse”, Blum Legrabox with Tip-On to create a seamless and handle free look and Corian in “Cirrus White” which also continued into the splash backs in both the hob and drinks station areas for a clean, modern and cohesive look. The existing Lockwood walls were gibbed and the timber ceilings retained but painted white to match the walls. This instantly brightened up the space whilst offering a stunning texture.
One of my favourite parts of the kitchen design is the drinks station, fitted with a 'Parex' steaming hot tap for just a touch of luxury! The drinks station and pantry units were fitted with 'Hafele Hawa Concept Pocket Doors', they open as a standard door then are seamlessly concealed back to allow ease of use when multiple people are using the space, with the option to be closed off when not in use.
Custom Keruing plywood slats were fitted to the island front to create texture and add warmth. These are, in my opinion the hero feature of the design. The space is finished with Cintesi Detroit bar stools, Plumbline Buddy Sink Mixer and Tom Dixon Beat pendant lighting in matt black. All materials (including the neutral grey tile by Tile Depot) have now been carried through to other areas of the home, which has now been completely transformed. Wouldn't you just love to live here?!
